STATEMENT FROM COMMODORE LYNN DURBIN
REGARDING THE RECENT SEWAGE SPILL IN THE POTOMAC RIVER
AND IT'S IMPACT ON SCOW ACTIVITIES

VADEQ has released its bacterial test results for March 9, 2026. While VADEQ did not retest areas at Washington Sailing Marina and Four Mile Run, it did test several points near the marina.

The results show the counts for E. Coli and Enterococci bacteria are within normal limits. Because of this, all SCOW boats will now become available for use.

I ask, however, that you keep in mind a few things:

  • SCOW is not determining that the River is safe. We are sharing information on bacterial counts as determined by Virginia's Department of Environmental Quality and their guidelines for bacterial levels which DEQ determines are safe for recreational boating.
  • Your decision to sail should be based on your best judgement.
  • Keep in mind that while air temperatures may be warm, the water is still cold. Make decisions accordingly.
  • The water at the marina will remain turned off for the foreseeable future.

SCOW activities in March are ramping up with upcoming maintenance days, Rub Off the Rust, more racing seminars and our spring brunch. Check the calendar on our website for dates and times. Watch your email for details.

Stay Safe,
Lynn
