Commodore Memorandum________ COVID-19 and the Sailing Club of Washington Good morning, In response to the proliferation of the novel coronavirus COVID-19, restrictions on gatherings have become increasingly stringent, affecting sporting and cultural events the world over. The impact of this global pandemic continues to grow more severe in the DMV and across the United States and estimates for containment have been pushed later and later into the year. SCOW Board members have maintained a steady dialogue, as we work together to determine the safest course of action for our members and sailing events. · For the safety of our Club members, for the next two weeks, we are taking our 8 sailboats out of service. We will reevaluate this action at the end of the two-week period to determine if this action needs to be extended. · We are postponing the following Club events through the end of April: Social Sail, all racing activities, Maintenance Days, on-the-water training classes and in-person Rub Off the Rust. We will reevaluate the status of Club activities towards the end of April. Our plan is to continue several activities on a virtual basis: board meetings, Train-the-Trainer, virtual Rub Off the Rust, membership meetings and possibly classroom training activities. We are working on all these activities right now. (Note: if you have expertise in virtual meetings, please contact commodore@scow.org) These are very difficult decisions for the Board, but these are equally difficult times for all of us. We need to do our part to flatten the spread of this virus. Our contact information is here https://www.scow.org/ContactUs - Your helpful suggestions are always welcome and encouraged. We are all in this together and we will all get through this together. Take care. We wish you and your family well and good health. Richard Kaiser, Commodore |
