Welcome to SCOW Sailing Activities

SCOW Club Boats

Very popular with club members is the opportunity to become a qualified skipper and use the club boats for sailing on the Potomac, from the Washington Sailing Marina. SCOW does have some requirements for this priveledge.

Download Guidelines to Becoming a Skipper to help you get started. For more information, contact skipper@scow.org .

Sailing lockers for flying scots are located at the "small boat shed"--a tan structure attached to the end of the boat storage racks near the launching ramp. If you walk away from the ramp up the row toward where the old lockers were, then look over to your right to the grassy area, you'll see the boat racks and the shed, with several lockers built into it.

The SCOW sail locker is the right hand one facing the river. The maintenance locker is the center one facing the parkway.  The  lock boxes contain the keys to the doorknob locks.

Potomac River Activities
Ask how YOU can lead a Potomac River sail!!! Contact: river@scow.org.

Each month there are SCOW events, usually on the weekends, that include sailing on the Potomac River. These will include boat raft ups, picnics, canoe trips, and more.
Crewing opportunities for both River and Bay Activities are available.

For more information contact baycrew@scow.org and let 'em know you're looking for crew opportunities.

Chesapeake Bay Activities
Ask how YOU can lead a bay sail! Ask how-even if you do not have a boat on the bay!!! Contact: bay@scow.org.

Throughout the sailing season there are SCOW sailing events that occur either on or near the Chesapeake Bay. Members who have boats on the bay or who can trailer boats to the water will gather for raft ups and/or dock parties during the summer months. To lead a bay sail or to invite SCOW members aboard your boat on the bay, please contact bay@scow.org .

If you wish to be added to a "general" crew list for bay boats, contact baycrew@scow.org. All bay sails listed in the SCOW calendar are tentative until a leader is announced. News about bay sailing events will be announced by email.

Sailboat Racing

Every Wednesday evening starting May through September, we meet at the Washington Sailing Marina at 6:00 pm for informal races. We race the club's Flying Scots, but members also race their own boats. No racing experience is necessary and everyone is welcome to join in. Come on down and crew!

SCOW also races it's two cruising boats in the Daingerfield Island Cruising Fleet race series every Tuesday evening from the third week in April through October.

More information on SCOW racing is available with a survey you can complete to help shape SCOW's racing program

Training

A special note:  The club provides training for SCOW MEMBERS only*.  This page and its links are provided to inform SCOW members about the training available.

SCOW's training courses provide opportunities for our sailors at all levels, from beginner to most capable, to advance to higher levels of proficiency.

Classes scheduled for 2008 include:

    Basic Sailing
    Intermediate Sailing
    Capsize
    Cruising Boat Sailing
    Spinnaker

All of the classes are held at the Washington Sailing Marina.  Download the current course schedule to see when classes are offered and if any space is available. Look at the February 2008 issue of Channels for a description of the courses. Contact SCOW's Training Director at training@scow.org for information.

In addition, our monthly meetings usually include a speaker, covering such varied topics as sail trim, racing, foul-weather gear, buying a boat, chartering, nautical history, Chesapeake Bay ecology, first aid, or sailing on exotic seas.

* SCOW is not affiliated with the National Park Service or Guest Services, Inc.  SCOW offers training to its members as part of our overall sailing program.  GSI is the official NPS concessionaire to offer sailing training to the general public at the Washington Sailing Marina.  For information on GSI's training, visit the Washington Sailing Marina  website.
